Pre-Wedding

The first wedding event in Telugu matrimony is the Nischyathartham. This is the engagement ceremony in which the two families will meet at a place to confirm the alliance and fix a suitable date based on the horoscope. Then the exchange of gifts and jewelry takes place. The bride will be gifted with new clothes and jewelry by her future mother-in-law. On the day of the wedding a ritual called Snatakam takes place which is actually a “Post-Graduation” ceremony that qualifies the groom as a scholar. This is followed by the fun act of Kaashi Yatra in which the groom pretends to take a trip to Kaashi to study further or become Sanyasi. He will be convinced by the bride’s father to stay back and marry his daughter.

Wedding Ceremony

·         Mangala Snanam – The bride and the groom are asked to take a holy bath to purify them.

·         Bridal Makeup – This is done before the wedding to make the bride and the groom more beautiful and purified at the time of the wedding. They will be applied with turmeric paste all over their body and washed. This is done at their respective houses.

·         Ganesh and Gauri Pooja – This is a ritual in which the groom and his family will attend Ganesh pooja at the marriage venue while the bride with her family attends Gauri pooja at her home.

·         Kanyadanam – This is the ritual of seating the bride before the groom with a partition between them restricting to look at each other. The groom’s feet will be washed by the bride’s father. Then the groom is asked to assure the bride’s father of his service to the bride in protecting her from all the sorrows and sharing her happiness.

·         MangalSutra Dharana – This is the act of the groom tying the mangalsutra around the bride’s neck thus making her his wife. Three knots will be tied.

·         Akshitalu – The bride and groom exchange garlands and get blessings from the elderly and married people from the gathering.

·         Saptapadi – The groom and bride take seven rounds around the sacred fire to complete their marriage.

Post-wedding

·         Gruha Pravesam - After the wedding, the bride is welcomed to the groom’s house by her mother-in-law.

·         Uniting the Mangalsutram – The two mangalsutrams tied around the bride’s neck will be united to show the harmony between the two families.
